Marclay, Christian / Record Without A Cover / 1985 USA

Christian Marclay plays to this fetish-as-sociation we have with records. He tropes on the record as an object and as a bearer of sound, engaging the device both in performance and in static physical manipulation. Furthermore, he allows the metamorphoses rendered on one aspect of the record to effect the other aspect. That is, when Marclay takes several records and montages them, inserting shards of one into slots cut into the other or mismaching pie slices or constructing checkerboard patterns or whatever method he employs to subvert (or even pervent) the wholeness and continuity of normal records, he does so in order to invent a new hybrid record which gives both visual and sonic evidence of its, her, parentage. A leopard-spotted disk is oddly lovely to look at - and starting to listen to. The visual patterns that result from the intercutting of different-colored vinyl are matched by the sound resulting from their play: a rhythmic seguing from one music to another, totally different music. The segues are rapid hiccups, not slow fade-out-fade-ins; contrast, not continuity, is Marclay's standard - although the segues occur so fast that the sounds blend into a pattern that (exactly like the visual appearance of the violated record) makes sense only as a whole but teases the ears with intimations of the originals.
