Two examples of "directions" for performers; Self-strangulation; The actor carries a steel spiral about two meters long in his right hand, which he swings over his head like a lasso; and an enormous hissing noise results. As the arm is lowered, the spiral coils round the performer's throat. While this is happening, he goes hastily to the back of the stage. A hand from behind the wings grabs him, and pulls him offstage by the spiral.

Accoustic: The player, his back bowed low, carries a polystyrol sheet, from which six spirals are suspended, which trail across the floor. Suddenly, the player interrupts his transit across the stage, so that a point of complete stillness occurs. In a second action, the same plate is lowered from the stage roof, and steered laterally in such a way that, once again, the combination of two actions with the same aural result, the accoustic takes on a clearly dialectical tension, stemming from the alienated effort. Noch immer legt die uberwiegende Mehrzahl der Musikfreunde in aller Weit bei Stereo-Wiedergabe im Heim eine Kunststoffscheibe auf den Plattenteller, deren Tonschrift mit der Spitze eines Tonabnehmers abgetastet wird. Alle Anzeichen sprechen dafur, daB dies such noch wahrend langerer Zeit so bleibt. Hier eine Neuentwicklung, die in ihrer Preisklasse echte MaBstabe setzt. Prazision steckt in jedem dieser Tonabnehmer. Auch im kleinsten und preiswertesten.

Zur subjectiven Prufung des Jaulens und Wimmerns eines Plattenspielers eignet sich am besten Klaviermusik, vorzugsweise langsame Passagen mit lang ausgehaltenen Tonen. Eine gewisse Art des Jaulens wird besonders gut horber bei Solostellen von Holzblasinstrumenten, zum Beispiel der Klarinette.

Die besten Tonabnehmerpatronen (es sind auch immer die teuersten) arbeiten fur gewohnlich selbst bei der niedrigsten fur sie angegebenen Auflagekraft noch einwandfrei, sofern sie in Tonarmen hochster Qualitat verwendet werden. Bei der Festlegung der Auflagekraft fur einen Tonabnehmer ist es im allgemeinen am gunstigsten, mit dem hochsten zulassigen Wert zu beginnen und schrittweise die Auflagekraft so lange herabzusetzen, bis diejenige Einstellung gefunden ist, bei der die Patrone in dem verwendetan Tonarm am besten arbeitet. Bevor man diese Einstellung endgultig belaBt , fuhrt man zweckmaBigerweise noch eine Oberprufung mit der am schwierigsten abzuspielenden Platte des eigenen Repertoires durch; es ist diejenige mit den lautesten und orchestermaBig am starksten besetzten Passagen etwa z.B. das,, Dies Irae" im Requiem von Berlioz.

Ausgangspunkt fur die wahrend der letzten Jahre erfolgte auBerordentliche Verbesserung der Tonarme ist der Stereo-Tonabnehmer gewesen. Er bewirkte, daB jeder existierende Tonarm unzureichend wurde und damit uberholt war.

In 1957 Allen Kaprow decided to try out the possibility that the "action" of Action Painting was a ritual act of creation, not just an incidental frenzy of movement that produced wild canvases. That decision effectively ended his growing career as a painter. Since then he has given to the world a word: the Happening. From Murray the K's radio program to the Revlon commercials, to peace marches and sit-ins, to the campaigns of politicians-that word seems to have satisfied a need to evoke the zest, freakishness and game of the life around us. Kaprow himself finds the Cape Kennedy rocket launchings among the most powerful quasi-Happenings. And one embittered cynic recently compared the war in Viet Nam to a "Happening gone out of control".
